Great interest surrounded the 21 x 17in (53 x 43cm) sketch of a young woman reading in a domestic interior, which had been in storage in Southsea for more than 15 years.
The two primary bidders in the room were representatives of commercial galleries in London and Paris, with the successful purchaser telling the auctioneers the work - possibly a study for a known oil - was still subject to research.
