Saleroom statistics show web bids on upward curve

Unique visits to the-saleroom.com have risen by 80% in the last year. As of April 2014, the average number of visits per month has exceeded half a million.

The year-end rise from 2012 to 2013 was 48%, demonstrating the dramatic upward curve in user numbers since January.

The latest report by the live online auction provider, which along with Antiques Trade Gazette is owned by ATG Media, highlights a number of other trends too.

While UK buyers account for four out of five successful online bids, the 20% made up by overseas buyers accounts for a third of the value of lots sold via the web. Between them they now generate an average of 190 bidders per sale. This has all translated into an 18% rise in new buyers and 42% uplift in the total value of lots sold via the platform compared to an increase of 23% in the number of live auctions held.

Live bidding now accounts for 27% of lots sold at auctions using the-saleroom.com and 16% of underbids, while a total of 650 auctioneers upload their catalogues onto the site, a 44% increase on 2012.

"This shows that the-saleroom.com has touched new heights of popularity and that the internet continues to change the landscape for auctioneers," said sales director Simon Berti.
