The Lennoxlove Amen glass, well-documented in Geoffrey B Seddon’s authoritative work ‘The Jacobites and their Drinking Glasses’, is to be offered for sale in Shropshire.
One of only 40 Amen glasses recorded, its
provenance traces back to the Lords Blantyre of Lennoxlove,
Haddington and their successors the Bairds of Newbyth.
Subsequently, it was sold at Christie's in 1947 and has been on
loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The engravings to the bowl, which include a
crown and two verses of the Jacobite anthem, have been fully
attributed to Sir Robert Strange (1721-1792), a Scottish artist and
an expert in diamond point engraving.
Estimated at £20,000-30,000, it is the star
of a single-owner sale of antiques belonging to the late Edward V.
Phillips, a Cotswold corn merchant, to be dispersed at Halls of Shrewsbury on November 6-7.
