Mellors and Kirk of Nottingham included a watercolour by Walter Langley (1852-1922) in their fine art sale on September 20-21.
Entitled Drying the Nets, Newlyn, the
10 x 14in (24 x 31cm) work had been passed down through the family
of Joseph Burrows (d.1920) of Birmingham and had never been offered
at auction before. It came in its original gilt oak mount and frame
and was in fine condition.
Fresh works by Langley always hold appeal, and a
private collector outbid members of the trade to secure it at £6500
against an estimate of £3000-5000.
The buyer's premium was 17.5%.
