Zinkeisen dances into Gloucestershire sale

This portrait of a ballet dancer by Doris Clare Zinkeisen (1898-1991), is estimated at £4000-6000 at Chorley’s sale at Prinknash, Gloucestershire on November 15.

The oil on canvas measures 2ft 11in x 2ft (91 x 62cm).

Doris Zinkeisen studied at Harrow School of Art then won a scholarship to Royal Academy of Art with her sister Anna. Doris went on to become a commercial artist, set designer and poster advertising designer. She worked on a number of films such as Bitter Sweet and Show Boat as well as a number of theatre projects with Noel Coward.

Both sisters were official war artists and painted views of St Mary's Hospital, Paddington.
