Irwin was killed while trying to save the airship which crashed in France. Many of the photographs were taken by Irwin when he was at East Fortune in Scotland, with many aerial shots of both naval and commercial ships in addition to pictures and documents relating to airships.

There are also photographs that relate to the surrender of the German Fleet on November 21, 1918, including portraits of Admiral Sir David Beatty, King George V and Queen Mary on board the Queen Elizabeth.
