An album containing over 200 photographs belonging to Flight Lieutenant Herbert Carmichael “Bird” Irwin (1894-1930), captain of the airship R101, is to be offered for sale at Netherhampton Salerooms in Salisbury, Wiltshire, on May 16.
Irwin was
killed while trying to save the airship which crashed in France.
Many of the photographs were
taken by Irwin when he was at East Fortune in Scotland, with many
aerial shots of both naval and commercial ships in addition to
pictures and documents relating to airships.
There are also
photographs that relate to the surrender of the German Fleet on
November 21, 1918, including portraits of Admiral Sir David Beatty,
King George V and Queen Mary on board the Queen
Elizabeth.
