Silver bowl with aerial connections

06 July 2012Written by ATG Reporter

In their silver sale on July 17 and 18, Woolley & Wallis of Salisbury will put up for auction a fine late-Victorian silver-gilt Monteith bowl.

Measuring 13in (35cm) high, it celebrates the remarkable achievements of Flight Lieutenant Alan Jerrard.

He was the only recipient of the aerial Victoria Cross awarded in 1918 for the campaign fought against the Austro-Hungarian Empire on the 'Italian Front' during the Great War.

He also became known as the 'Pyjama V.C.' after being taken a prisoner of war in Italy wearing only his pyjamas.

Estimate £8000-12,000.
