THE classical horse head with powerful Art Deco styling is among the best known of all the 28 different René Lalique glass car mascots.
The 5in (12cm) model comes in two types: one with a single mane,
known as Longchamp 'B', and another with a double mane dubbed
Longchamp 'A ' that had an earlier and remarkably short production
run of just three months between June and September 1929.
They are very rare, but, courtesy of a vendor in Fulham, two
turned up at West London's Chiswick Auctions (20% buyer's
premium) on March 23.
Both had small chips but they were particularly desirable for
their frosted pale amethyst colour. The signature R. Lalique,
France, is moulded to the circular base.
Specialists queued to buy them at their pre-sale estimate of
£500-800, but ultimately they sold in the room at
£17,000.
