They are Baldwin’s of London, Christie’s South Kensington, Dickins of Middle Claydon, Dreweatts of Donnington Priory, Golding Young of Grantham, Adam Partridge of Macclesfield, Wellers of Chertsey and Peter Wilson of Nantwich.

The shortlist is based on nominations from a survey of online buyers at the-saleroom.com.

Other auction rooms that were highly rated by online bidders included Aston’s of Dudley, Batemans of Stamford, Dominic Winter of South Cerney, Eastbourne Auction Rooms, Gerrards of Lytham St Annes, McTear’s of Glasgow and Wilkinson’s of Doncaster.

The judging panel will assess the short-listed auction rooms on a wide range of criteria including pre-sale information and post-sale service, as well as the auctioneer’s skill in making the best use of the Internet on the day of the sale.

The winning auction house will be invited to bring a team to London to participate in ATG’s annual pub quiz in December, where the presentation will be made and the trophy awarded. The prize will also include overnight accommodation in London for the winning team.
