Proof that politics never really changes…

26 May 2009Written by ATG Reporter

AFTER the resignation of the speaker of the House of Commons Michael Martin last week, the subject of this cartoon of the 1830s could hardy have been more topical.

A Sharp Contest for a Rotten Seat: or, A Set-To for the Speakership comes from a very long run of an extremely scarce and politically radical series of caricatures by Charles James Grant called The Political Drama.

Six numbers are missing from this bound collection of Nos.1-131 from the years 1834-35, but the two sets in the British Library are nowhere near as complete.

They are being offered at £6500 by Jarndyce of London.
