This 113/4in (29cm) high slate sculpture titled Maquette for Large Sculpture: Four-Square (Four-Circle) was the first that Penzance auctioneer David Lay had offered for sale.
The anonymous vendor, a Cornish-based professional,
was a personal friend of Hepworth and received the sculpture as a
gift after admiring the bronze original commissioned for Churchill
College, Cambridge. It was sold on July 30 together with copies of
letters from Hepworth to the owner in which she refers to her
conception of the work.
Estimated at £30,000-35,000, it took £60,000 from a
London buyer.
