Louis Wain’s Cubist cat makes £8200

30 June 2008Written by ATG Reporter

THIS pottery figure of a cat is among the rarest of the Cubist-style felines designed by Louis Wain for the Austrian manufacturer Amphora.

Offered for sale at The Canterbury Auction Galleries on June 17, The Futurist Cat, as it is known, measures 10 1/2in (22cm) high and carries the registration number 637132.

The vendor from New Jersey believed it would sell best in the United Kingdom although, following competition from buyers in the room and on several telephones, it is now winging its way back across the Atlantic to California.

And the price? A punchy £8200 plus 15 per cent buyer's premium.
