Veterans for the Vaults

26 January 2005Written by ATG Reporter

AFTER more than 41 years, veteran silver dealers Hymie and Shirley Dinerstein have left West London’s Portobello Road.

However, they have not abandoned dealing and are still trading in English and foreign silver, antique Sheffield plate and other good plated items from Room 135, The London Silver Vaults, 53 Chancery Lane, London WC2 (Tel: 020 8445 3224) – strictly by appointment only.

Having seen more than four decades at Portobello, Hymie thinks possibly the major change he has seen is an unfortunate one, the amount of newer goods being sold in the world-famous W11 market.

Among the couple’s fondest memories is September 8, 1974 when nine market regulars were invited to New York to recreate a corner of Portobello Road opposite Grand Central Station.

Hymie was the silver representative and did $2000 worth of business – “not bad for one day at that time” he says.
