WHEN it comes to Beatrix Potter, they don’t come rarer than this previously unrecorded first trade edition of The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
One of only two copies specially bound for the author, with
the inscription, below right, it had been in the same family for
over 80 years. The whereabouts of the other copy, given to the
future King Edward VIII, is unknown. This copy, however, soared to
a double-estimate £40,000
hammer when it sold to a UK trade bidder at Christie's South
Kensington on November 16.
