There was a healthy take-up on the 200 or so football programmes with the vast majority finding buyers. This included Harold Hardman's personal copy of the programme for the England v Wales international played at Anfield on March 27 1905, which sold for £3400.
Harold Payne Hardman was an outside left from Blackpool who had joined Everton in 1903. He later played for Manchester United and became a director of the club. The programme was signed by the player on the front cover and was pasted with a match report press cutting. The lot also came with Hardman's selection letter from the FA. England won the match 3-1.
The sale also saw a 1966 World Cup pennant from England's second group match with Mexico sell for a top-estimate £2500. It was made of maroon silk ground with gold threadwork forming the Jules Rimet emblem with a large medallion. Goals from Bobby Charlton and Roger Hunt sealed a 2-0 England victory at Wembley on this occasion.
There were also 17 lots relating to Newcastle's most capped player, Alf McMichael, who made over 400 appearances for the club between 1949 and 1962. The full back was a stalwart of the Magpies' victorious 1952 FA cup team that beat Arsenal 1-0 in the final. His winners' medal, made from 9 carat gold, with the player's name inscribed and fitted in its original case, sold at £5500 and his No 3 Cup Final jersey made £3400, both exceeding their upper estimates.
Elsewhere in the sale, President Eisenhower's personalised golf clubs sold for £1250. They had been custom-made by Spalding Robert Jones and comprised four woods, eight irons, a wedge and two putters. The wedge was stamped with the president's signature.
