Commissioned in 1922 for the chapel serving the Notre Dame convent, teacher training college and girls’ school in Dowanhill, Glasgow, the window remained in the chapel until 1981, when the chapel was deconsecrated, and it was then installed temporarily in the main hall of St Andrew’s Teacher Training College, Bearsden, Glasgow, where it has remained until recently.
The Art Fund have also announced a grant of £10,000 towards the price of £21,000 to enable the National Museums of Scotland to purchase a sword made c.1822 for MacGregor of MacGregor. The hilt incorporates elements of an earlier one, said to have been carried at Culloden by a MacGregor ancestor. The blade is also of an earlier date, though unlikely to be as old as the Battle of Glen Fruan in 1602 as indicated in the inscription on the hilt. In both acquisitions, the Heritage Lottery Fund paid the difference.
Art Fund grants mark start of centenary year
THE National Arts Collection Fund have announced a raft of new grants to celebrate the start of their centenary year. First up is a grant of £33,000 towards the £132,000 needed by the Glasgow Museums to acquire Harry Clarke’s stained glass window depicting the Coronation of the Virgin.
