Now a new auction house has opened its doors for the first time in the city. Milne-Klein emerged from the ashes of the now defunct Chicago salerooms of Butterfield’s and Sotheby’s.

Vice president of Milne-Klein, Merle Klein realised that there would be all to play for when the closures left only one major auction house in the city.

On the fairs side, the Stella proposal hopes to capitalise on the Mid West client lists of European dealers such as Hallidays who are already active in the region and have been standing at fairs in the city for a number of years.

If the fair gets the go-ahead, it will join yet another new Chicago fair planned for May next year to coincide with the existing Art Chicago. Who is planning this new event? – Leslie Hindman, who sold her Chicago auction business in 1997 to Sotheby’s... who have now closed the salerooms, making way for Milne-Klein to expand their interests.
