The project means the gallery will be able to bring their reserve collection out of store and create the setting for future acquisitions of major collections of modern and contemporary art.
The gallery’s collection includes works by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson, John Piper, Walter Sickert, Graham Sutherland, and contemporary artists such as Frank Auerbach, Peter Blake, Patrick Caulfield, Lucian Freud and Richard Hamilton.
The grant immediately triggers additional funding of £2.1m from other sources, which leaves a shortfall of £1m to complete the project.
