UK: THE Professional Football Association was the successful bidder for L.S. Lowry’s crowd scene Going to the Match at Sotheby’s London last Wednesday, setting the record for the highest auction price for a Modern British painting at £1.75m

The previous record was set by Sir Stanley Spencer’s The Crucifixion, which made £1.2m at Sotheby’s in London in May 1990. The previous Lowry record was set at Phillips, London in June last year by his urban scene Piccadilly Circus, which made £510,000.
