Specialist - Travel,Maps & Atlases

LONDON Sotheby's is one of the most prominent and influential forces in the auction world, combining proud tradition with state of the art expertise. Our origins date back more than 270 years when Samuel Baker, the founder, held the first-ever sale of rare and valuable books. Books and manuscripts remain prime areas of our business and we are the leading sellers in this diverse field. In this role you will be involved in cataloguing, researching and helping co-ordinate Travel, Maps, Atlases and Natural History sales within the Books and Manuscripts department, as well as generating new business. Reporting to the Head of Department, you will work closely with colleagues in promoting sales and working on the preparation of valuations. You will also be involved in all aspects of the production of sale Catalogues. Educated preferably to degree level, you will have some specialist knowledge of cartography, travel and plate books, and natural history books. It would also be an advantage if you were familiar with the rare book trade or auction houses in general. Organised, flexible and able to work well under pressure, you will be equally comfortable operating alone or as part of a team and be prepared to work extended hours at deadlines and to travel in the UK and abroad. You should be able to communicate at all levels within the business and with a wide-range of potential clients, while additional European language skills would be advantageous. In return you can look forward to a competitive salary and benefits after one year's service that include private health cover, pension, life assurance and permanent health insurance.

To apply, please upload your CV and a covering letter through the Sotheby's careers portal at the following address: inside/careers.html

Closing date for applications 14th December 2015.
