Two recent lots both dating from 1966 reflect these light-hearted depictions.
At Aston’s (20% buyer’s premium) of Dudley on April 22 a Marx Toys Batman action figure described as “an incredibly rare find” sold to a UK private collector for £1500 against an estimate of £300-500. It was the first poseable Batman figure, with moveable arms and legs and a turnable head and body, and came with all of the accessories.
Chris Aston said he “pulled it out of the messiest house clearance I’ve seen for a while sitting behind a load of comic books and Playboy magazines on the back of a shelf”.
Vibrant colours
A day later, Prop Store (25% buyer’s premium) of Rickmansworth offered a dynamic and vibrant Tom Chantrell design for Batman (previewed in ATG No 2438).
The film was based on the Batman TV series which ran from 1966-68 and also starred Adam West as the superhero and Burt Ward as Robin. The theme was very much tongue-in-cheek.
In original folded (as issued) condition with bright, vibrant colours, the 2ft 6in x 3ft 4in (76cm x 1.02m) poster had been printed by Stafford & Co of Nottingham and London. It was consigned by a private seller and sold on low estimate for £7000 to a private UK buyer via Prop Store’s own platform.
